What's Not To Like
Speaking of La La: I'm not much of an Ashlee Simpson fan, although, like with her sister, I'm a big fan of her tits. I enjoyed the Pieces of Me VIDEO. With the sound OFF. I never advocate censorship, but I'd relax my views if that song was going to be banned. Where was I? Ah, yes. La La. I like that song, it's catchy, and it has the words La La in it. I'm sucker for la la la or yeah yeah yeah. And man enough to admit it.

Nipples Are Not Sex, Nor Blood Violence
Too often we imagine the blurring of kid and grown-up cultures as a series of violations: the 9-year-olds who have to have nipple broaches explained to them thanks to Janet Jackson; the middle-aged guy who can’t wait to get home to his Xbox. But this demographic blur has a commendable side that we don’t acknowledge enough. The kids are forced to think like grown-ups: analyzing complex social networks, managing resources, tracking subtle narrative intertwinings, recognizing long-term patterns. The grown-ups, in turn, get to learn from...

My 2004 Mix CD
I decided to try my hand at Rich Thomas’s End of the Year Mix CD Challenge. However, I haven’t added a whole lot of music to my library this past year due to running low on disk space at work (where I do most of my listening — thank goodness we’re due for new machines any day now). Rather than put some fringe new stuff, like Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan, I figured I’d throw in some of my all-time favorites.

My Favorite Band Is Cooler Than Yours
Furthermore, there is nothing "indie-yuppie" about those bands, the bands have just become popular in the standard yuppie crowd. Nirvana was just as popular to the same crowd some years ago. The yuppie crowd likes anything that the people who are cooler than them supply them with, once they become comfortable with the music they will name drop the bands continuously to flex their street cred, it is the normal evolution.

American Idol Recap-Week 7
Uh oh. Vonzell is singing a ballad, "I Turn To You" by Christina Aguilera. This is a HUGE tactical error. We like upbeat, fun Vonzell, not torch singer Vonzell. And not just that, she's also having problems hitting the notes. It was a rough performance.

Robert Thorne: The Man, The Myth, The Hilary Duff Manager!
Teen screen and music sensation Hilary Duff has signed a management pact with the executives who helped turn twin pop icons Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen into household names.
As the two began scouting new management opportunities a few weeks ago, Duff was at the top of their list, in part because Susan Duff had contacted them a few years ago about becoming involved in Hilary Duff's career, Thorne said.

Review: Fighting Temptation
The Fighting Temptations
is a movie starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Beyonce', and I'm going to give it a "highly recommend". The movie is nothing to write home about, but the music is divine.
The O'Jays, Beyonce', The Blind Boys of Alabama, Faith Evans, Melba Moore, Rev. Shirley Caesar, and Missy Elliot all sing complete gospel (and a couple of rap numbers) songs, and make the poor plot completely irrelevant. If you love good toe-tappin' music, this is a movie for you.

Comfortably Numb
What a waste of four minutes and twenty-six seconds. Seriously, who thought this was a good idea? It sounds as if the Bee Gees got back together and recorded a crappy disco version of this song, probably just because they hate Roger Waters. Yeah, I know it sounds kind of funny and maybe worth a listen, but that feeling lasts for maybe thirty seconds before you are filled with uncontrollable rage and curse the Scissor Sisters for visiting this travesty upon us and curse the Bee Gees for inspiring them. That’s what it did to me, anyway. Let me know if you want to come along when I egg their house.

Teenagers and young women have long taken style cues from celebrities, of course. But the sway of the Olsens is especially surprising because it is a radical swing from influences of recent years, like the flamboyantly sexy, skin-baring style of Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson, as well as the heiress look popularized by Paris Hilton.

Idol Slumps, Retailers Suffer
Sales are 10% behind this year -- 16 million units. Some of it is Idol's fault. It's gotta be. What American TV show will make up the shortfall? If it's gonna be "The OC" they're gonna need to can the hip indie rock and shoot for middle America's love of Celine Dion. (Let's hope that doesn't happen.)
Or maybe Usher can hurry up and put out another album.

Focus On The Drum
There are some days where playing drums is more beneficial than any amount of meditation. Today is one of those days. I was dragging, simply due to lack of sleep and the sugar low from dark chocolate star wars m&m's (they're evil!) but a half hour of playing drums and I'm ready to go again! Tonight I played the first couple of songs off Winger - Pull and then the first songs off Green Day - American Idiot. I have to play more punk stuff so I get the style in my head so I don't play rock when I have my own punk band. They're similar, but there...

Anwar Out
After Tuesday's `70s disco-themed "American Idol," Anwar Robinson failed to stay alive on Wednesday night's show.
Despite being earlier hailed by judge Paula Abdul as technically this season's best singer, the dreadlocked Robinson received the fewest votes and was sent home, narrowing the field of contestants to just six.
In his performance Tuesday, Robinson sang Earth, Wind and Fire's "September." Judge Simon Cowell's assessment proved prophetic.
"I don't think it was a winning performance," Cowell said.

Janet Jackson to Entertain Pope With Justin Timberlake
As the Vatican’s chief defender of theological doctrine, it’s no surprise he’s already being condemned as a “traditionalist” and a “hardliner.” Of course, if some of the modernizers had their way, a new pontiff would be announced with the declaration, “We got pope!” Or maybe “The pizzy is in the hizzy!” Then Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake would bump and grind a bit before His Holiness rolled out in a newly pimped-out Pope-mobile.

Went to See Avril in Concert
Click through for full review.Today we went to watch the Avril Lavigne concert. She so rawks. Pug Jelly (I think) opened for her. They were pretty good. This is my first time hearing their music. They sound a bit like Simple Plan meets Green Day. She opened with He Wasn’t. While she was singing Together and Forgotten, she played on the grand piano. I had no idea those...

At Least Hilary Duff Was In It
Ten and I went to see Raise Your Voice last night. Yes, of course she picked the movie as it is a total chick flick. However Hilary Duff is hot so I agreed to watch it. As my gym trainer commented to me, she can always get her boyfriend to watch a chick flick, as long as the girls are hot. Us men are kind of easy to manipulate that way.
However movie was pretty lame and predictable. A few funny moments, but not many.

Too Much Jewelry, Not Enough Music
Well, Beyonce again. And she’s wearing an entire Cartier store around her neck. I’m not actually hearing a note of this song, because it’s so god-awful middle-of-the-road in its Andrew Lloyd Webberesness. Just a boring, boring mess of a melody with gratuitous key changes and stuff. And now they made her be greeted by some schmoe in a Phantom costume, and . . . isn’t this song over yet? No? I’m just going to pretend it is. It’s better for all involved.

Amerie's "One Thing"
Who knew...This is the only thing on pop radio right now that stops me from flipping stations. It's produced by Rich Harrison, the same guy who did Beyonce's epochal "Crazy in Love." He also did the new J-Lo single, but we'll forgive him for that. Harrison's trademark is to start with a red-hot sample, crank it up in the mix, and force the vocalist to dance around it. J-Lo's overwhelmed by the sax riff in her single, but Amerie does an amazing job bouncing off the thrilling drum riff in "One Thing," sampled from an old Meters track. The mix is pretty bare bones - mostly the sample, the vocals, and a single guitar chord played once each key change. What makes it work is that Harrison lets the drums, not the vocals, take the lead. At one point, in fact, Amerie just drops out for about 30 seconds, so we can just enjoy the killer riff.

That's The Ticket
Yeah, so my holiday wasn’t too exciting. I finally bought an Avril Lavigne concert ticket yesterday (Yay!) so I’ll definitely be attending her concert on the 10th of May at the suprisingly small Westridge Park Tennis Stadium. And yes, it’s on the same day as my sencond Applied Maths test. The test however finishes at 7pm and the concert officially starts at 8pm so I’ve got an hour to get there. I’ll probably leave as soon as the test is over. I’ll phone and prebook a Mozzie Cab or something before the test starts.

Does Anyone Care?
Does anyone really care that Britney Spears is pregnant? It’s pretty obvious that her marriage is close to over, and the baby is just something which will add another couple of months onto the awkward union. Guess the pregnany explains some of the increased breast size, as well as the obvious plastic surgery.

Back To The Rockers
I was bought up in a family of diverse musical tastes, I was raised with the likes of Peter Paul and Mary, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle, then the likes of Dire straits, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd. In the eighties I switched between the Glam rockers such as Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and others to AC/DC, metallica when they started to make the scene, but always going back to the good old rockers. Because that always where the fun was.

Metallica Screw-up

I find this album highly lacking and this is comming from someone who likes all different kinds of music. Now dont get me wrong, there is still some good stuff that is on this album but as a whole I think that Metallica really screwed up here. One thing that I didnt like was there was virtually no studio production done on this album. This is a live sound and I know many people would give Metallica a thumbs...

Listening to Copy, Right?’s roundup of Nirvana covers, I realized something: I kinda dig the way the girl from Evanescence sings. I mean, it’s sort of a knockoff of whasshername from Miranda Sex Garden and whasstheirnames from Rasputina. But she’s still pretty good.

Censorship Is Good For Sales
When an artist has a song banned or has their song censored, they often tend to sell more records. Famed rapper Eminem sold more than half of what was projected in sales when his controversial Marshall Mathers LP c.d was released. Society's youth are the majority of the sales that occur with such "explicit " c.d's. Sure, this may be a problem for parents, however, if children are taught the importance of right and wrong then there is no danger in their children listening to the music. Parents cannot watch their children every minute of everyday so the values that they instill in their children will play a key role in what their children choose to listen to or buy.

Usher Everywhere
Living on Eastern Long Island, we don’t get much in the way of radio stations. Mainly, it’s Connecticut stations we get from across the Sound, which offer either classic rock or top 40 pop, and local stations which play whatever they seem to want to (mainly either adult contemporary, classic rock, or a varying mix of everything on the planet). Nice to have, but for those of us who want to hear new music not put out by Usher, you have to look for an “Alternative” station.

Cobain Tribute
Eleven years after his death, Kurt Cobain's hometown has finally embraced the legacy of the late grunge icon. Last week, the title of one of Nirvana's signature hits, "Come as You Are," was added to the "Welcome to Aberdeen" sign on the anniversary of Cobain's April 5, 1994, suicide.

Nelly and Civic Duty
Ive seen the same Vote or Die poster since before the Red State Captains came to town for a little party last year and even just recently laughed about how out of date it was. So imagine my confusion when upon walking past the Garden instead of being greeted by Nelly peering down at me imploring me to do my civic duty, I was instead confronted by a couple rolling in the hay and the tag line advertising a new WE show. The shock. I almost tripped in the middle of 7th Avenue, confused, disoriented. Where was I? Where was my rapper friend? As if...

Metallica In The Wee Hours
Stayed up last night till almost 2 a.m. Not too late but it felt late enough because of the busy day and night. Was in the crusader room/kitchen with Jaryd, AJ, Katherine, Abigail, Joey, and various others of the group came in and out. We listened to sweet bands (Oasis, Ataris, etc.) and made Ramen and hot chocolate. I burned my hand pouring hot chocolate into a nalgene–great fun. Listened to some Metallica (St. Anger) in my headphones while doing OT homework and got up to jump around a few times.

And Here I Thought I Was So Good at Holding My Shit Together
The other night I was sitting upon my Pottery Barn-esque sectional sofa couch downstairs watching some MMM-MMM good TV with the kids snuggled up with me in the dark. (Digression #1, I believe we were watching Cadet Kelly with the uber-wholesome Hilary Duff, but after you read the following...
(Digression #5, I was wearing my lovely new cropped yoga pants over my GAP undies, so don't be calling CPS and say that I was watching Hilary Duff in only my gotchies. Oh, and I had a very baggy top on too.)

Green Day Reviewed
Click through for more Green Day reviews. When I was at school I remember thinking that Green day were really grungy and only tomboys listened to them (it was an all girl school). A turning point came when I heard “Time of Your Life” and I was so moved by this song that I went out and bought the single and spent some time over the years attempting to memorise the chord sequence so as I could play it on my guitar. Since then I’ve discovered more and more songs I like by them, the kinds of songs I liked but never really knew who was responsible for them. “Minority”...
“Holiday” is another typically bouncy Green Day track. I can’t say there’s anything very outstanding about it apart from the phrasing of the lyrics and the melody they follow. “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” the other single from the album so far breaks the bouncy trend of the album so far. I really love this track. It’s on a par with “Time of Your Life". It’s a little mournful but has a chorus that introduces more guitars and lyrics that any self respecting teenager would be happy to smudge their...
“Are We the Waiting” is about as close to a ballad as you’d get on a Green Day album. It’s quite beautiful. It sounds as though they got some rather tuneful football fans in to help out with some of the choruses. It works. It’s like a choir but more edgy. Unfortunately it leads very awkwardly into track six. It’s like being tipped out of a wheelbarrow onto some rather sharp rocks. And track six isn’t even very good.

You do realize what this means, don't you? Britney Spears currently has at least one fan. And I thought we were finally moving past skinny blondes with record deals. (And is it just me, or does the way that photo's cropped make it look incredibly fake? A little too much Photoshop work on that one.)

Beatles and Friends and Love
I'm in Paris today on a business trip, hanging out with my oldest friend David. David has been a fan of the Beatles forever, and, together, we watched Anthology, the 10-hour-long video documentary on the Beatles. We couldn't stop! This documentary is a breathtaking dive into the soul of the 60's, rock 'n' roll, psychedelics, hippies, etc. I realize for the first time how "spiritual"...
More on the Beatles and spirituality, and George Harrison and spirituality. But better still: listen to their songs...

Western Influences in Arabia
Driving to Al Qantab, I passed through a small, poor village. Goats roamed freely, munching on rubbish, while young boys ran alongside the car, waving excitedly. Passing an old, disused building, I noticed two pieces of graffiti, both in red paint. The first was in Arabic – a fairly standard scribble praising Osama bin Laden. The next was in block-lettered English – EMINEM, it said. As I whizzed out from the town, it occurred to me that these simple scribbles explained a great deal about Middle Eastern politics, and regional attitudes towards the West.

Elton lauds Eminem
Sir Elton John has said that rapper Eminem is a talent equalvalent with Jimi Hendrix and Mick Jagger.
“From the start, I’ve always admired Eminem’s thinking. That’s the reason I wanted to appear on the Grammys with him when I was asked, despite all the nonsense talked about his being homophobic,” Sir Elton said. “Let the Boy Georges and the George Michaels of the world get up in a twist about it if they don’t have the intelligence to see his intelligence.”
Sir Elton made the comments in the latest issue of Rolling Stone, where Eminem is part of a special “Immortals” edition, which features the 50 greatest figures in rock ‘n’ roll history.

Secret Of Ashlee Simpson's Success
This Ashlee Simpson gal really cracks us up. The singer’s most recent backstage concert rider, describes her four-piece band’s “orchestration” thusly: “Drums, Bass, 2 Guitars, and pre-recorded sequences operated by the drummer.” Along with keeping the beat, Ashlee’s poor bandmate also has to press the play button (an indignity never suffered, of course, by Max Roach, Charlie Watts, or even the Spinal Tap drummers). The rider also includes the 20-year-old performer’s dressing room demands,...

Chocolate Shake and Green Day
After I left the office I did a rare thing, and drove through a fast food place and got a chocolate shake. I had Green Day playing on the CD player in Becky's Mountaineer so the stereo sounded nice (in my Mustang the speakers are pretty shot). I pulled up into our driveway at home and sat there for about 10 minutes drinking the shake and listening to Green Day.
The longer I sat there, the more I realized that the combination of a chocolate shake and Green Day were really a pretty perfect one. They sort of felt very natural together. I had a few minutes a restful joy as I sat there at 1:15 AM, the moon shining through the sun roof and enjoyed the excellent mixture of Green Day and a chocolate shake.

Hip Hop Night @ Caesar's
Later came the singing/rapping performances. I've heard some Chinese rap CDs, and I wasn't overly impressed. I wondered how much worse these kids would be. Not much! True, it seemed all the beats were taken from well-known songs like Coolio's "Gangsters' Paradise" and Usher's "You Remind Me of a Girl," but I was amazed at the talent they demonstrated. The group worth noting is called X-44. I'll try to catch them again.

Spears & Hubby In Reality Program
Featuring what UPN bills as "exclusive, never-before-seen private home videos" of their "personal love story," the six-episode series is scheduled to premiere later this year. It picks up shortly after the pair met in Los Angeles and headed to Europe on tour, where Federline performed as a backup dancer for Spears.
UPN is also shooting new footage and commentary with the couple, who wed in September. It was the second marriage in nine months for Spears, who married childhood friend Jason Alexander in a surprise wedding in Las Vegas in January. That marriage was annulled 55 hours later.

Another Note On Musical Attitudes
I never did disagree with Zenarchery's last reply to my previous article, but it needed to be noted that comparing the music of Green Day to that of Bob Dylan wasn't exactly fair. They are two different styles of music, both "good" or "bad" in different ways, even if both might be found under the "Rock" section at your local Best Buy. I like them both, but for different reasons. My original intention was not to compare old to new, but rather to point out that there should be an acceptance of new music.

Scott Savol Has A Great Voice, But ...
Scott Savol: I feel for this guy. His voice is stellar. But up there in that big pink shirt, with Fat Joe chains and style, he looked like a huge piggy. He seems so nice, and so stupid, and so fat, and so rural, and so typically American. He has those clubby little short fingers, and he has no jaw line at all. Its rough, because average ugly Americans don't want to watch average ugly Americans. Much like Piggy from Lord of the Flies, Scott won't last long on this island.

David Byrne's Very Own Liquid Radio
For a full list of people currently playing, click on the link below, but know that the show begins with The Arcade Fire and ends with a little Billy Bragg and Wilco one-on-four action. Beyonce, Biz Markie, and Paul Simon mix it up in the middle.

Scissor Sisters Noteriety
I think Jess will be most upset. Her reasoning for listening to bands like Scissor Sisters and Dresden Dolls is because they’re bands that have a small following, but are obscure enough that most people dont listen to them - That is, most people listen to the top 40 pop crap. I agree. I’m sorta ‘leaning’ towards Triple J but they’re talking annoys me to...
Anyway, on Sat morning (Yesterday) I was watching Rage , after they’d done their Aria Top 40 stuff, and was flicking thru cos they had some crap on [Looks like I’ll have to stay up and watch it at 1 AM of a friday night/sat morning, like everyone else out there!]. Anyway, Channel 9 had So Fresh on…[Warning: Avoid site at all cost - the Barbie Pink is known to insult!] And they were playing a Scissor Sisters video clip / song. I was curious at first, then shocked, then impressed - yes, mixed emotions.
they’re talking hey kris?? lol.. and i don’t listen to scissor sisters anymore for exactly that reason

Usher Wins at Kids Choice Awards
Other top winners included Adam Sandler for favorite movie actor, teen idol Hilary Duff for movie actress, Usher for male singer and Smith for voice from an animated movie.
Most of the winners offered brief words of thanks, but Usher and Smith delivered advice to their young fans.
"Make sure you brush your teeth, say your prayers, eat your vitamins," Usher told the audience of some 10,000 screaming youngsters at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion. "You can be anything you want to be in life. All you have to do is believe in yourself."

American Idol Shocker - Jessica Sierra Out!
In the performance on Tuesday night, Simon Cowell told Jessica Sierra that she was a good singer but that she didn't have the "likability factor." Apparently, Simon was right. Not only was Jessica sent home tonight, but none of the other American Idol finalist shed a tear for her departure. Which is very odd considering American Idol finalist are usually notorious for crying at the drop of a hat. It looks like someone would have thrown some sympathy sobs Jessica's way considering the crying...

Torrentbox Downloads
I found this site where you can pretty much download anything you want for free. The downloads are a bit slow but if you’ve got broadband then it shouldn’t matter too much. So far, I’ve downloaded discography’s (entire cd collections) for the following bands: Nine Inch Nails, U2, Megadeth, Metallica, The Cure, and Journey. All together I’d say that’s about 60-70 albums. It looks like I’ll be needing a massive amount of blank cd’s so I can burn them all. I’ve haven’t tried downloading...

Eminem Never Fails
So I am hanging out at my friends place this weekend and he puts on the new eminem CD. At first I didn’t really enjoy this CD as much as I did the others. His other CD’s had more upbeat songs with a lot of jokes in them. This CD is more about the actual lyrics than jokes. So as the night went on I kept playing and it began to grow on me. Few songs stuck out most, "Ass Like That", "Puke", and "Mosh". The latter which I really did not care for, being the staunch republican I am, but the other two are hysterical. When just listening...

Savol Stays On American Idol
"American Idol" finalist Scott Savol was once arrested after a confrontation with his son's mother — but it won't cost the singer his shot at stardom.
Although several past contestants have been booted for not disclosing arrests, Savol was "forthcoming to the `American Idol' producers and the network regarding his misdemeanor" and "the situation did not warrant his disqualification," Fox said in a statement Thursday.

Britney Is Pregnant!
So far, the most compelling evidence put forth for a future arrival of a little Cheeto or Cheet-ette is Britney's recent fuller figure. For the last few weeks, a steady stream of paparazzi pics featuring Mrs. Federline in everything from a green bikini to a strapless maternity-like dress has led to an exhaustive investigation of her curvier bod by amateur sleuths, who haven't been this focused since Tara Reid accidentally bared her breast.

Ana Matronic taking a break from scissor sisters
I wonder if she'll be replaced by a drag version of her fabulous self...Ironically she fancies a change of direction, “(His band is) mainly electronic based” commented Matronic-Mnemonic “it’s quite different from the Scissor Sisters”.

Good on the PETA
How do people really know if those furs are real...Ew, Jennifer Lopez should be ashamed of her skanky ass. Real fur is something to be ashamed of… though I will wear leather without batting an eyelash.. it’s disgusting as well [hypocritical, I know]. I she learns that faux fur is not only in and socially acceptable but won’t cause people to dump buckets of paint on you either.

Green Day's Politics. I mean, Music.
The rest of the Top 10 may be trite, but at least they're trying. Green Day, despite their faux cockney accents and deep derivativeness, have excellent politics, and the songs actually have chords; they are trying to put forth an actual notion. "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is just Em G D A (like about twelve other pop songs I could name, including, basically, "Wonderwall" by Oasis) but they are attempting something - and, I believe, succeeding.
