Top Ten Bands

music beatles cover
Click through for this blogger's top ten band list.

I’ve been thinking, I have such an awsome taste in music that it was really hard to catagorize which ones were better than the others. First off, most of my music was from the 60’s and 70’s so it’s really hard for people to understand or even know what I’m talking aboot. Plus I only decided to include bands that are more rock so I didn’t add Steely Dan or the Beatles to the mix. Well I’m here to say that these are my top ten bands that I think are above the rest. I tried to go by more than how much I like them and more towards how influential they are and by how creative they are. Here are my top ten.

Road Tunes

music beattles sargeant peppers
I'd just stay home and listen to music with a list this good.

I have been working out which music I’m going to take. Currently it’s: Jack Johnson (On and On), The Beatles (Sgt Pepper), Cat Empire, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell (Blue), Franz Ferdinand, Missy Higgins, Good Charlotte (cringe), Death Cab For Cutie and Postal Service combination, The Whitlams, Bernard Fanning (plus other Aussie stuff), The Libertines and four mix cds. Yes, I am a music nerd. If only my computer would stop being horrible I could finish burning everything. Amusingly my father added Bing Crosby to my list of cds to burn.

Click through for blissful humor.

The first two videos are really funny and The Big Finale presents an amazing juggling act accompanied musically by Golden Slumbers (Once there was a way to get back homeward) from my favorite Beatles album, Abbey Road. Besides being a comedian, he writes serious political essays (he’s a liberal). Thanks to Adman for the link.

Move Over Elaine Benes!

music kids dancing
Tell me more about that:

I came into the livingroom, and found Stuart sitting on the floor bopping along to the rhythm of the Beatles “Octopus’ Garden,” while Liam, flailing his arms, and doing deep knee bends, while turning in circles, made sure to stay close to the stereo. As fourteen-month-olds go, I think ours is a pretty good dancer…move over Elaine Benes!

I'm the other way around.

Cat Stevens is the only music I can listen to constantly and never get tired of. I can’t even do that with the Beatles. I will never get sick of “Trouble".

Best And Most Influential

music the beatles album cover
I don't think The Beatles had the best individual talent, but something great happened when you put the four of them together.

Right now I'm watching Ringo Starr being interviewd by Craig. While I like a lot of rock and roll bands, I still think the Beatles were the best and the most influential.

Nic Armstrong

music nic armstrong
Come to think of it, Nic Armstrong does sound like John Lennon.

The show kicked off with a set from Nic Armstrong and the Thieves. I liked what I heard but it was wasted on the crowd. The poor bastards didn't even have any lights. Come on. How was anyone on the lawn supposed to see them? The one thing about these guys is that Nic Armstrong sounds so much like John Lennon from early period Beatles it is spooky. I guess that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm sure they would sound fantastic in a bar setting.

Following

music the beatles
I disagree, but everyone gets a chance here at Blog Carnival.

The Beatles are a group which, with the possible exception of Bob Dylan (and maybe Bob Marley), have the largest following in inverse proportion to how much they deserve it.

Paul McCartney

music beatles paul mccartney and guitar
I loved Paul McCartney's perforance.

As for highlights, I have to admit there were quite a few. The first act of the day in London - U2 and Paul McCartney doing the Beatles’ “Seargent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” - U2’s part was excellent, as always, Coldplay and Richard Ashcroft doing The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony”, the amazing set of - and amazing reception to - Gordon Lightfoot, Green Day playing Queen’s “We are the Champions”, and of course, the Pink Floyd reunion set.

Music Influences

music beatles sargeant peppers cover
Great look at pop music circa 1993.

It was very much an “alternative rock” album in the climate of 1993. In America, grunge was at its peak. While contemporaries R.E.M. latched onto this with their distortion-filled Monster, U2 released an album without angst or even a single guitar solo. In Europe, BritPop was beginning to conquer the charts, yet Zooropa owed more to the experimentation of David Bowie and Brian Eno than to the melodic pop of The Beatles and The Kinks.

The direct influence of the Beatles on Jay-Z's Grey Album explained.

Jay-Z – Arguably the greatest rapper. Undeniably, raps greatest hustler. I admire him immensely for both. ALSO – this song is from the Grey Album. The Grey Album was done by DJ Danger Mouse and mixes Jay-Z’s lyrics with samples from the Beatles. One of the most creative things I’ve ever heard. Again, if you haven’t heard…listen.

Shiny Happy People

music the beatles poster
This sounds a little like my parents when I was growing up listening to The Beatles.

So where did all the Rock and Roll go? Music over the past 10 years has gone down hill. Rock and Roll had a huge impact on modern culture as we know it. Where would be if there were no Elvis, No Beatles, no Greatful Dead, or no Rolling Stones? Music lately has consisted of pop stars who sing cheerful songs that all seem to sound alike. The last time hard a hard rock band became famous was in the early 1990’s. Bands like Nirvana and Green Day were topping the charts. That was more than 10 years ago. Since then we have been plagued with boy bands like “The Backstreet Boys,” “NSYNC,” and “98 Degrees.” And pop icons like the annoying Britney Spears and the “dirty” Christina Aguilera. I personally don’t even consider “pop” real music.

The 5th Beatle

music beatles picture
Sing along is the best way to learn harmony, although it doesn't guarantee a spot in the band.

So contiuned the singing and harmonising..mostly to Karen Carpenter, The Beatles and anything within my range with strong harmony lines. I would always be the 5th Beatle..Adding a 5th harmony line to "No Reply" or anything that they did. I had no idea what I was doing..I just heard lots of melodies and it seemed to fit in........

music beatles strawberry fields with flowers
BBC to air documentary on John Lennon's killer, Mark Chapman.

The interviews have been handed over to the network by journalist Jack Jones, who quizzed Chapman on three separate occasions for his book Let Me Take You Down - published in America in 1995. The title of the controversial tome is a chilling play on the first line of psychedelic Beatles classic Strawberry Fields Forever.

Music Keeps People Together

music the beatles please please me cover
The Beatles are a big part of keeping music together.

In the midst of these, I could count my uncle and aunts in influencing me in popular music. I could still remember my aunts with their ears glued to the radio. Changing stations without looking at the dial which I thought was really cool. I had the notion they could recognize the radio stations just by listening to it. Turned out they were just looking for Beatles, Dave Clark Fives, and Beach Boys music. They introduced me to my lifelong admiration of the Fab Four.

What's On Your iPod

music beatles cover
The iPod can reveal so much about someone:

The playlist does reveal a rather narrow range of babyboomer tunes. Writing in the London Times, Caitlin Moran noted: “No black artists, no gay artists, no world music, only one woman, no genre less than 25 years old, and no Beatles.”

Back To The Rockers

music beatles performing
I am amazed how well the rock groups play today.

I was bought up in a family of diverse musical tastes, I was raised with the likes of Peter Paul and Mary, The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle, then the likes of Dire straits, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd. In the eighties I switched between the Glam rockers such as Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and others to AC/DC, metallica when they started to make the scene, but always going back to the good old rockers. Because that always where the fun was.

Beatles and Friends and Love

music the beatles black and white
I love this story of friends sharing The Beatles:

I'm in Paris today on a business trip, hanging out with my oldest friend David. David has been a fan of the Beatles forever, and, together, we watched Anthology, the 10-hour-long video documentary on the Beatles. We couldn't stop! This documentary is a breathtaking dive into the soul of the 60's, rock 'n' roll, psychedelics, hippies, etc. I realize for the first time how "spiritual"...

More on the Beatles and spirituality, and George Harrison and spirituality. But better still: listen to their songs...

Disheveled Hair

music beatles chinese album cover
Too much fun in China!

I found this great Beatles' album cover at Tony Fletcher's iJamming. There are two interesting details I should point out:

1. Notice all the band member's eyes? They have been changed to make them look more "Asianized" (and in John Lennon's case, more stoned).

2. The phonetic translation of the band name "beatles", actually means "diheveled hair" in Chinese.
