Sad Janet
sad sad sad day for janet jackson fans! Their idol is still reeling from the Nipplegate scandal of so long ago! Bad Publicity stunt with a very bad aftershocks! her songs ain't getting the airplay she once had! Talking about getting the boot from MTV who once declared her Icon. Now the once iconic image has ironically become a hasbeen of sorts! Even with all the publicity (magazine covers, tv performances both in Ophrah and Today show) the album could only make it behind Ludacris! sad state of events for her! Her music now reviewed to be old tepid and a clone of most female R&B singers!

Dove's Latest Salvo: Super Bowl Sunday
They want to reach at least 90 million people at once with a message about helping girls accept themselves, and being confident just the way they are. And since Janet Jackson so ably taught us that the Super Bowl is nothing if not a Program Suitable for the Whole Family (hence our Shock and Awe at her partial disrobing), what better opportunity to reach American girls and their parents than Super Sunday?

The End, And Start, Of A New Era
In a way, the FCC won the war. Their recent laws that will allow individual broadcasters to be fined $500,000 for "obscene material" they air on TV or radio was the driving force behind Howard's move from free, advertiser-driven radio to the paid-subscriber driven Sirius. Just think: all this came about because Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson's floppy, pierced breast in the Super Bowl halftime show. How could this be? Well, it spawned congressional hearings for months afterward; these hearings and the threats of major fines caused two major media groups (Clear Channel, then Citadel) to "fire" Howard from their stations around the country. One includes where I live as Citadel took Howard off Providence's HOT 106.3 FM. Thank God I can get WBCN out of Boston, which has been a loyal affiliate of the Stern syndicate. I never had to miss a laugh.

Let's Dance
Go to the music outfitters and type in “100 top songs” and the year you graduated from high school in the search box. What pops up is a list of the top 100 songs from the year you graduated from high school. Bold the songs you loved, strikethrough (or italicize) the songs you wished were wiped off the face of the earth, and leave blank the songs you either don’t care about or have no idea what they are.

Music Choice 90s Channel
Before I start, I have to say that I am getting quite addicted to the Music Choice 90’s Channel. Playing right now is “Diamonds and Pearls” by Prince. A song I haven’t heard in 10 years. Before that was “Shiny Happy People” by REM and “Escapade” by Janet Jackson. This channel rules!

Unethical Advertising?
* Current advertising primarily focuses, directly or subliminally, on sex, power, self-glorification, and greed. While we get appropriately angry about Janet Jackson’s nudity on prime-time TV, we don’t make much of sensuous women in suggestive attire hawking pizza, autos, and widgets. Similarly, why aren’t we more upset about all the new car and truck advertising? Such ads fuel the greed of millions of people, driving them and our nation ever deeper into irresponsible spending and debt (not to mention the fact that they shift our focus from the Creator to the created–in a sense fostering a form of idolatry.)

Kate Schutt
Those edges are kept raw through a self-proclaimed addiction to live performance. Kate just released her third live album entitled “Broken.” A Hendrix-inspired, runaway train version of “Autumn Leaves.” “Over the Rainbow” done on a cheap guitar, exposes an as yet unnoticed haunting melancholy. A sauntering rendition of “Lady is a Tramp.” A courageous approach to an intimidating list of jazz standards, indeed. Add a blistering version of Janet Jackson’s “Miss You Much” (not to mention a better-than-the-original cover of George Michaels’ “Father Figure”) and you might wonder, “What kind of music is this?!” Move over Folk/Punk, Kate has something a little meatier … Folk/Monk. Folk informed by the unconventional, angular wit of the jazz great Thelonious Monk. Everything old is truly new again.

Singers And Dancers
While I’m on this jaunt, I also want to mention that a singer is not always a dancer. How can you tell? When a singer moves their arms and not their feet, they are not dancing! The worst offender of the singer/dancer combo is Britney Spears. Here’s how you can judge for yourself if she is a dancer or not. Watch her in a concert performance. She might move her feet a little bit but those AROUND her do the dancing to trick you into thinking she is dancing, too. Britney just moves her arms around.
A few singer/dancers who earned that title the hard way are Prince, Janet Jackson, *NSYNC, Madonna and Sammy Davis, Jr.

That's Obscene!
I do feel a bit differently about the whole Janet Jackson thing because I think it was a sad and pathetic attempt by a hasbeen musician to make herself relevant again that it just needs to be mocked and insulted. There was no reason to have a song that says “I’ll have you naked by the end of this song” and then show her tit. I’m sorry to go off on a tangent, but I never really voiced my opinion on the whole thing. However, the FCC did overstep their bounds by a quite a bit after that.

Nipples Are Not Sex, Nor Blood Violence
Too often we imagine the blurring of kid and grown-up cultures as a series of violations: the 9-year-olds who have to have nipple broaches explained to them thanks to Janet Jackson; the middle-aged guy who can’t wait to get home to his Xbox. But this demographic blur has a commendable side that we don’t acknowledge enough. The kids are forced to think like grown-ups: analyzing complex social networks, managing resources, tracking subtle narrative intertwinings, recognizing long-term patterns. The grown-ups, in turn, get to learn from...

Janet Jackson to Entertain Pope With Justin Timberlake
As the Vatican’s chief defender of theological doctrine, it’s no surprise he’s already being condemned as a “traditionalist” and a “hardliner.” Of course, if some of the modernizers had their way, a new pontiff would be announced with the declaration, “We got pope!” Or maybe “The pizzy is in the hizzy!” Then Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake would bump and grind a bit before His Holiness rolled out in a newly pimped-out Pope-mobile.

Whitney Houston Takes Over for Janet Jackson
Very interesting.Janet Jackson lost Horne's vote to play her when the pop superstar bared her breast at last year's (2004) Super Bowl, and now the Stormy Weather singer has given her blessing for troubled Houston to step into her shoes.

Hollywood gets religion
Religious and other conservative groups have shown little love for Hollywood or the recording industry over the years, decrying everything from explicit rap lyrics to Janet Jackson's bared breast at the 2004 Super Bowl.
